Details of the programme

Programme content and structure

Over the course of seven semesters (210 ECTS), you will be trained as a qualified computer scientist at HFU.

Foundation Studies (Semesters 1–2): You will build a strong technical foundation in programming, databases and mathematics for computer scientists. You will also delve deeply into algorithms, data structures, computer networks, and the fundamentals of data science and computer architecture.

Advanced Studies (starting in Semester 3): Beginning in the third semester, you will deepen your expertise in cutting-edge modules such as software engineering, computer vision and machine learning. At the same time, you’ll begin your chosen specialisation. In the fourth semester, you’ll learn how complex systems are developed through courses in software design and project management, and you’ll apply this knowledge directly in your first semester project.

Practical Training and Graduation (Semesters 5–7): The fifth semester is a practical training semester spent directly in industry. You can spend the sixth semester — without losing any time — at one of our many partner institutions abroad. We’ll help you navigate the administrative hurdles. In the seventh semester, you’ll complete your studies with required elective modules and your thesis.

FAQ
Can I study even without an NC (Numerus Clausus)?

Currently, the General Computer Science program has no admission restrictions. This means we focus on your talent and motivation rather than just your high school grades. You can apply directly and secure your spot.

Tip: Take advantage of our instant admission! Apply directly through our Mio portal — without having to go through hochschulstart.de (DOSV). This way, you’ll secure your admission offer in record time and can approach semester planning with peace of mind.

Do I already need to be a perfect programmer?

Absolutely not! We start with the basics of programming and mathematics in the foundational studies. More important than prior knowledge is your problem-solving mindset. Our computer science community will help you get up to speed quickly.

Tip: Be sure to attend the orientation week to find your study group right away — computer science at HFU is a team sport.

What’s the difference between Computer Science and specialised programmes?

Specialised programs often focus on a narrow topic right from the start. Our general Computer Science programme, on the other hand, offers you the perfect mix of focus and freedom. You start with a broad foundation in the core areas and can adjust your specialisation (SWE, AAI or MIN)right up until the start of the main programme (3rd semester) without losing any time. This way, you don’t have to make a final decision on the first day; instead, you can wait until you know your strengths.

Tip: Use the first two semesters to figure out whether you’re more interested in the logic behind AI models, the design of software architectures, or the user interface — you can switch your specialisation within the first year.

How flexible is the online study model?

As flexible as possible. You participate in regular lectures digitally, no matter where you live.

Tip: Make extensive use of tools like Discord to stay in direct contact with your fellow students, even from a distance.

What is “Study Plus” and is it worth it for me?

If you want to combine theory with a salary right away − yes! You’ll earn two qualifications in 4.5 years (Bachelor’s + MATSE training). You’ll be permanently employed from day one, earn your own money, and have a nearly 100% guarantee of being hired.

Tip: Apply for Internal link opens in the same window:Study Plus while you’re still in high school, as spots at our partner companies in the region are highly sought after.

How big are the classes? Am I just another number in the lecture hall?

Absolutely not. At HFU, you study in small groups. The professors know your name, there’s room for questions, and you receive personalised support from mentors.

Tip: Take advantage of the professors’ office hours — they’re happy to help you with any individual issues.

What happens if I fail an exam?

Don’t panic — it’s not the end of the world. Computer science is challenging, and almost everyone stumbles at some point. Our academic regulations offer fair opportunities to retake courses; thanks to an innovative bonus/penalty system, you don’t have to worry about difficult modules. Plus, our advisory network helps you tailor your study plan to your individual needs and get back on track.

Tip: Always review your exam papers — often, it’s just small misunderstandings that you can avoid in your next attempt thanks to the feedback.

Furtwangen is in the Black Forest — is there even anything going on there?

Furtwangen is a true “campus town.” Since almost everything is within walking distance, you’ll constantly run into familiar faces. The sense of community here is particularly strong. We support each other in our studies and spend our free time together — whether playing sports outdoors or enjoying evenings together at the Reftreffs (student clubs).

Tip: Take advantage of our mentor programme right from the start! Experienced students from higher semesters will not only show you the best study strategies but also introduce you directly to the community and the best spots on campus.

How much practical experience is actually involved in the programme?

A lot! In addition to team projects in the 4th and 6th semesters, you’ll spend the entire 5th semester as a practical internship semester at a company. Here, you’ll apply your knowledge directly and build contacts for the future.

Tip: Use your internship semester specifically for networking. In the IT industry, personal connections are often just as valuable as good grades. Many students secure their first job offer this way while they’re still in school.

Can I study abroad while I’m in school?

Yes! The 5th semester, as a practical study semester, is ideal for gaining international experience at globally active companies. In addition, the option of a bilingual degree prepares you in the best possible way for international teams or an international career.

Tip: Consider writing your bachelor’s thesis in collaboration with a company abroad — this will help you tailor your profile specifically for the global job market.

I had the best time of my life in Furtwangen. And realised what I wanted to achieve professionally.
