Your study place in just a few steps

Furtwangen University uses an External link opens in a new window:online application platform for applications for a bachelor's programme. There you can apply for one or more degree programmes.
Applications for master's degree programmes are made exclusively via our online application platform.

This is how the application process works:

You have the following options!

You want to apply for a place on several bachelor's degree programmes and/or on admission-restricted degree programmes which are assigned over hochschulstart.de?

  • First register at https://www.hochschulstart.de
Your applications to our university and other universities are coordinated on Hochschulstart.
  • Then register and apply on MIO, Furtwangen University's online application portal: https://mio.hs-furtwangen.de/
There is a constant exchange of data between MIO and Hochschulstart. The status of your applications is updated with every change.
You can apply for up to three bachelor's degree programmes at our university
  • External link opens in a new window:List these in order of priority.
When allocating study places, Hochschulstart follows your preferences. Rank your applications on hochschulstart.de with your preferred programme in first place.

You've already decided which bachelor's degree programme you'd like to apply for at Furtwangen University?

  • Register on our online application portal https://mio.hs-furtwangen.de/ and check whether immediate admission is offered for the programme you're interested in. “Sofortzulassung” (Immediate admission) will be written after the programme.
  • Registration on hochschulstart.de is not required for degree programmes which offer immediate admission as these are not coordinated by Hochschulstart. When registering on our online application portal, you can leave out the information on BID and BAN.
  • After your application documents have been checked, an immediate offer of admission for this degree programme will be made. Once you've accepted the offer of admission, you will receive a letter of admission. Your study programme is now confirmed and you can go ahead and enrol.
  • For this reason, please only apply for one degree programme with immediate admission.

How do I prepare?

You'll be able to upload your application documents during the online application process on MIO. A virtual assistant will guide you through the application process. Please get ready by saving the following PDFs in a folder on your digital device:

  • Copy of university entrance qualification (all pages in one PDF)
  • CV (tabular form with no chronological gaps)
  • Study orientation test (Studienorientiertungstext from External link opens in a new window:www.was-studiere-ich.de - available in German only)
  • If available, documents for the selection process (1 PDF per criterion)
  • If applicable, other documents, e.g., for advanced semester entry - transcript of grades with passed and failed examinations.

Please select the teaching language in the filter

These dates are important

The application process for summer semester 2026 starts at the beginning of November 2025 (lectures start in March 2026) − application deadline is 15 January, 2026.

When the coordination phase starts, an offer of admission for one of your applications may be made at any time due to the release of ranking lists and the withdrawal of other applicants. If there is more than one offer, the Hochschulstart coordination process begins.

After the regular procedure has ended, a waiting list procedure begins. You can find study places which are still available in the External link opens in a new window:Hochschulkompass Study Place Exchange and on our website.

Allocation procedure

Furtwangen University awards places on degree programmes with restricted admission according to the university's own selection procedure if there are more applicants for a degree programme than there are places available.

In degree programmes without a surplus of applicants, every applicant who meets the admission requirements receives a study place; there is then no selection procedure.

After deducting the preliminary quotas

  • 90 percent of study places via the selection procedure
  • 10 percent of study places via the waiting period (does not apply to International Business Management)

are awarded.

Advance quotas:

  • 10 percent foreigners (applies to non-EU nationals)
  • 5 percent hardship cases
  • 2 percent second degree
  • 1 percent local commitment in the public interest
  • All preferred applicants (rejection due to military service/replacement service)

The university's own selection procedure is generally carried out for all degree programmes. A different set of rules applies to all English-language degree programmes abroad (currently International Business Management and International Business Information Systems): half of the available places are allocated to foreign applicants and half to Germans.

The selection criteria are:

1. Academic performance (German, mathematics and the best graded,
advanced (modern) foreign language). In the degree programme International
Business Management course, only English language skills are
     are assessed.

2. University entrance qualification grade
(Abitur, entrance qualification for universities of applied sciences, etc.)

3. Other achievements including:

  • Completed vocational training in a technical, business or IT occupation
  • Practical activities in connection with a degree course in technology, computer science or economics
  • Extracurricular achievements, e.g. prizes and awards
  • Work abroad for at least three months

Please note: "Other achievements" can only be taken into account in the selection process if you enclose appropriate evidence with your application.

A selection committee will make a selection based on the above-mentioned selection criteria, on the basis of which a ranking list will be drawn up. The available study places are allocated in the order of the ranking list. There is no written test or personal interview.

The allocation procedure is based on the University Admission Regulations (HZVO).

Studying without a high school diploma (Abitur)

You can apply for a place at Furtwangen University without a high school diploma (Abitur).

What requirements do I have to fulfill?

There are two admission routes for studying without a high school diploma:

  1. Professionals with advanced training
  2. Those with vocational training and professional experience

According to the State Higher Education Act (LHG § 58 para. 2 no. 5 and 6 in the version of 1 April 2014) and the Professional University Admission Ordinance (BerufsHZVO of 1 April 2014), those who have completed recognised advanced training courses, e.g. master craftsmen or business administrators, are eligible for general university admission, i.e. they are entitled to study all subjects at all universities.

Professionally qualified persons with at least two years of vocational training and, as a rule, three years of professional experience can acquire an entrance qualification for a course of study corresponding to their previous professional training by passing an aptitude test.

For both admission routes, an additional advisory interview takes place at the university.

1. Requirements for professionals with advanced training

  • Successful completion of a publicly regulated advanced training course, in particular in accordance with the Vocational Training Act, the Crafts Code or § 14 of the Education Act, based on at least two years of vocational training. Recognised advanced training courses are, for example:
    • Master craftsman examinations
    • Other publicly regulated advanced vocational training courses including: IHK business administrator, commercial business administrator, banking business administrator, insurance business administrator, industrial business administrator, specialist business administrator
      • Completion of a technical college within the meaning of § 14 of the Education Act including: state-certified technician, state-certified business economist
      • Certain qualifications from an administration and business academy (VWA)
  • Qualification for higher professional competence and function
  • Preparatory course with at least 400 teaching hours
  • Advisory interview at a university

Application

When applying, it is important to contact our Admissions Office well before the application deadline so that we can check the advanced training qualification before the application and have time to schedule an advisory interview with the Dean of Studies if this has not yet taken place.

The following documents are required during the online application process:

  • Curriculum vitae in tabular form
  • Certificates of vocational training and further education
  • Documents for the selection procedure, if applicable
  • Certificate of employment, if applicable
  • Download file:Proof of the advisory interview at a university

The average grade of the higher education entrance qualification (HZB) that is decisive for the university's admission procedure in admission-restricted degree programmes is the average grade of the advanced vocational training.

2. Requirements for subject-specific university admission via an aptitude test

  • At least two years of completed vocational training corresponding to the desired course of study
  • Professional experience of generally three years in a field relevant to the intended course of study following the vocational training
  • An advisory interview in accordance with § 2 Para. 2 LHG on admission to a university for professionals
  • Passing of aptitude test at the Constance University of Applied Sciences (HTWG Konstanz)

The aptitude test

The aptitude test is taken at the the HTWG Konstanz. You can register for the exam at Furtwangen University. The costs of the aptitude test can be passed on to the applicant on a pro rata basis.

The examination consists of a written and an oral examination: The written examination consists of three parts: German, English and a subject-specific supervisory paper related to the chosen degree programme (e.g. mathematics/economics; mathematics/technology). The oral examination covers the applicant's general knowledge of cultural, political, social and economic topics. It also offers the opportunity to check the written grades.

Further information can be found under: External link opens in a new window:Hochschule Konstanz.

Application

Application deadlines

The application for admission for the following winter semester must be submitted to the Admissions Office at Furtwangen University by 1 February of the year. Admission to the summer semester is generally possible, but the aptitude test is only offered once a year in Constance. It is possible to register for the examination at the HTGW Konstanz until the end of March.

Application documents

The following documents must be enclosed with the application:

  • Application for admission to the aptitude test
  • Curriculum vitae in tabular form
  • Officially certified copies of certificates of vocational training and professional experience
  • Documents for the selection procedure, if applicable
  • Certificate of employment, if applicable
  • Proof of the advisory interview

Professional equivalence

The Dean of Studies at Furtwangen University will decide whether the vocational training and professional experience correspond to the chosen degree programme.

Mutual recognition

The aptitude test passed by universities within the meaning of § 1 LHG in other federal states or by other state authorities will be recognised if it is the same course of study or a related course of study with essentially the same content. An advisory interview from another university will also be recognised.

After passing the aptitude test, an online application for the desired degree programme is possible within the application deadlines.
