Furtwangen University has had a Siemens SUR-100 teaching reactor, a so-called zero power reactor, which is suitable for teaching and research, since 1973.
The following types of measurement can be carried out:
- Gamma ray measurements (measurements in various localities)
- Gamma spectrometry
- Radon measurements
- Contamination measurements
In the relevant required elective, students have the opportunity to gain the additional qualification of "Radiation Protection Specialist S 2.2 and S 4.1" (Fachkunde für Strahlenschutz S 2.2 und S 4.1), (see additional qualifications).
Furtwangen University is a member of the South-west Germany Research and Teaching Association for Nuclear Engineering in Baden-Württemberg (Südwestdeutschen Forschungs- und Lehrverbunds für Nukleartechnik in Baden-Württemberg) and also works together with other well-respected institutions such as the Karlsruhe Institute for Technology (KIT).
