What is HFU.Prep?
HFU.Prep is a qualification programme designed to prepare you for studying in German at university. It can be taken as a pre-semester course focussing on your German language skills.
With us you get:
- compact, effective preparation for the German certificate exam at C1 level (TestDaF)
- German courses specifically tailored to your area of interest
- the possibility to attend seminars/lectures in the subject area of your choice at participating faculties
- soft skills for your studies (e.g. study and motivational techniques, academic writing)
And you are not alone!
We support you in all phases of your HFU.Prep semester, both with your professional training and your everyday life. We are happy to advise you on any questions you may have.
Once you have successfully completed HFU.Prep, you can directly apply for one of the degree programmes at HFU or another German university.

Prerequisites
In order to participate in the HFU.Prep programme, you need to have:
- language proficiency in German at CEFR B1/B2* level (External link opens in a new window:CEFR = Common European Framework of Reference for Languages)
- a university entrance qualification ("Hochschulzugangsberechtigung") to study at a German university
*We recommend starting with a B2 level. If you have a solid B1 level and ideally have already taken at least one B2 course, you can also be accepted into the programme.
Syllabus

Active participation of students is strongly encouraged, made possible by the small group sizes.
The content taught in HFU.Prep is specifically designed to prepare you in the best possible way for your studies at a German university of applied sciences (HAW).
In addition to language skills, the programme also promotes the individual choice of subject skills. Furthermore, courses in soft skills such as learning strategies and academic writing ensure that you start your studies in top shape or that you can complete your studies successfully.
We will be happy to advise you on the degree programmes available at HFU and help you to plan your future career.
How much does the programme cost?
- HFU.Prep is free of charge.
- All students at Furtwangen University pay a semester fee of €149 per semester (from Winter Semester 2023/2024).
- You are required to pay the fees for the certificate examination (TestDaF, DSH etc.) yourself.

How do I apply for HFU.Prep?
You apply for HFU.Prep via the Furtwangen University application portal.
This is how the application process works:
- Please register on the Furtwangen University application portal at https://mio.hs-furtwangen.de
- As confirmation you will receive a welcome email with an activation code.
- Save your curriculum vitae (CV), university entrance qualification certificate (school/university diplomas + recognition of these diplomas by Studienkolleg Konstanz) and proof of German language proficiency as PDF files on your PC. You will need these documents later in your application.
- Apply at our university. You will be guided through the application process by an assistant.
- You can interrupt the application process at any time and resume it later, e.g. if you need to research information. Your previous information will be retained.
- You can only edit the application and the relevant information until the point where you finally submit it by clicking on "Submit application". After that, changes can only be made after the application has been withdrawn and the application will not be processed by the university until it is resubmitted.
- You can use the "Print Control Sheet" function to check and print all of your entered data.
You need the following documents for your application:
- Curriculum vitae
- short letter of motivation (maximum 1 – 2 A4 pages in German or English)
- Proof of German language proficiency at CEFR B1* or B2 level
- Proof of university entrance qualification (The Centre for International Students in Constance ("Studienkolleg Konstanz") checks certificates and issues the necessary certification with which you can apply at any university of applied sciences in Baden-Württemberg, see External link opens in a new window:Centre for International Students in Constance

What happens after I apply?
After 15 July (for the following winter semester) or 15 January (summer semester) you will receive your admission letter from the student affairs department. With our support, you can then enroll at Furtwangen University and start your HFU.Prep semester with the intensive language course.
As long as there are places available, we accept applications for the winter semester until the beginning of September, and for the summer semester until Mid-February.
