Laser-markable, matt, scratch-resistant surfaces for miniaturised medical instruments

Minimal invasive instruments are subject to a high level of mechanical stress: the surfaces of friction and sliding points must have a matt structure and be chemical- and scratch-resistant. The degree of surface roughness varies according to the application. Some of the coatings currently available on the market have very good scratch-resistance yet suffer when exposed to the standard cleaning processes of medical technology.

The project aims to develop a new, hybrid coating for medical instruments with a high degree of mechanical stability. In one of the sub-projects, at Furtwangen University part of the coating system will be produced by means of atomic layer deposition (ALD), then analysed, and process engineering implementation will be realised.
