The chemistry is right here
Through research and optimisation of new chemical compounds in the field of organic and bio-organic synthesis, aspiring scientists and engineers can develop innovative solutions for current challenges in health, the environment and industry.
The organic and bio-organic synthesis laboratory, one of the chemistry laboratories in Schwenningen, is designed for the development of novel organic molecules, in particular on the basis of biomolecules such as carbohydrates, amino acids or terpenes. In addition to the purely synthetic aspects, this also includes isolation and purification techniques such as extraction, distillation or chromatography.
The majority of the compounds synthesised here are part of research projects with the aim of developing antimicrobial substances or functional surfaces that have either antimicrobial, biocompatible or CO2-binding properties.
Purpose of the lab
Simple analyses are carried out directly in the laboratory using thin-layer chromatography, refractive index or melting point measurements. Complex analyses of the synthesised compounds are carried out on the basis of Internal link opens in the same window:instrumental analytics.
Additionally, surface peptide syntheses (solid phase peptide synthesis, SPPS for short) can be carried out here on functionalised glass slides and on corresponding plastic surfaces. In cooperation with the Internal link opens in the same window:Bioanalytics Lab these surfaces can then be tested for corresponding functions, and heterogeneous gas-surface interactions can also be observed using the thermography method.
In addition to doctoral research and student research projects and theses (Internal link opens in the same window:Applied Biology and Internal link opens in the same window:Molecular and Technical Medicine degree programmes, this laboratory also hosts the practical analytics course (Internal link opens in the same window:Applied Biology degree programme), in which students can gain experience with state-of-the-art laboratory technology.

Projects
Tandem project CARBaBIO - Expired
The aim of the project is to investigate the possibility of producing carba sugar derivatives from simple basic chemicals such as simple cyclohexane compounds. The synthetic focus should be on a high yield and purity on the one hand and on the stereoselectivity of the products on the other.
- PepKatCO2, Catalytic CO2 processing - Duration 04-2022 - 06-2025
Within the scope of this application, the possibilities of combinatorial chemistry will be used to produce libraries of several 100 different peptides consisting of 4-8 amino acids and to investigate their CO2-binding and ultimately CO2-processing properties using a novel screening method.
