Furtwangen University looks back on a 169-year history of education and innovation. Sustainability is firmly anchored in our mission statement as "the topic which will most impact the future of our society and therefore will also most impact the University".
More than 40 years after the Club of Rome published the "Limits to Growth" report in the USA, we believe and are already experiencing that new paths must be taken to preserve the Earth's habitat. With "Fridays for Future", the younger generation is showing that it is concerned about its future and wants to move to solutions based on scientific insights and innovation. The elites in science, politics, the economy and society are more than ever before being called upon to participate in those solutions.
An Afternoon about our Future will take place on Tuesday, 29 October 2019 from 3.30pm in the auditorium of Furtwangen campus. Prof. Dr. Ernst Ulrich von Weizsäcker is one of the world's most renowned experts on the preservation of the future. He talks about "Living Space Earth: We need Quality Innovations for our Future".
Professor Weizsäcker's scientific work encompasses the technological, economic, political and social dimensions of the future. He provides a comprehensive outlook on global developments and possible quality innovations. With "Factor 5", he has developed a concept for solutions in which the world of the 21st century can become 5 times as resource-efficient, and as a result can bring prosperity, quality of life and the living space Earth into balance using new technological possibilities. "We need quality innovations for our future," is his summary of what is required in order to preserve the future of the Earth as a living space.
The Afternoon about our Future is being run jointly with the Furtwangen Campus Church Congregation and the AStA student organization. Workshops for students will be held after the lecture. The Afternoon about our Future is organized by Prof. Dr. Achim Karduck, Professor of Computer Science, Senate Representative for Sustainable Development, and Director of the HFU Furtwangen International Campus.
