Research for greater animal welfare

Cell biology work is essential in research, medicine and biotechnology for the development of new drugs against diseases such as cancer.

In the Cell Culture Lab at Furtwangen University, students can learn everything from basic methods to highly complex three-dimensional tissue models.

These can be used as alternative methods to animal testing and therefore contribute to the reduction of animal suffering in research

Purpose of lab
Equipment
  • 4 sterile benches with 6 workstations
  • 2 incubators for cell cultures
  • Cryostat, kerosene embedding and microtome for tissue sections
  • Fluorescence microscope
  • Fluorescence microscope with incubation chamber for long-term experiments
  • 3D printer for tissue printing
  • Low pressure pump for microfluidics
  • Luminex for analysing released analytes from 3D organotypic cell cultures
  • OCT (optical coherence tomography) for 3D analysis and visualisation of microspheroids
Projects
  • Part of the 3R network: Development of cell culture models as an alternative method to animal testing
  • 3D organotypic cell cultures
  • Skin model for wound healing experiments
  • Tumor microenvironment models with different tumor cell types
  • Blood-brain barrier model for pharmaceutical testing
  • Tumor cell metastasis in the microfluidic system
