... share your expert knowledge

  • Teach in various formats
  • Supervise students
  • Supervise theses
  • Conduct examinations

Application-related and practice-oriented training and further education is a top priority for a HAW professorship. This could, for example, also take the form of projects and excursions (possibly also in cooperation with companies), where you accompany and guide your students in order to enable the most practical and innovative training possible. After all, good learning comes from good teaching − our professors make a direct contribution to helping young people find a career.

... research in interdisciplinary teams

  • Present at congresses and conferences
  • Supervise doctoral students
  • Publish in specialist journals
  • Acquire third-party funding

Research and transfer projects are often carried out in partnership with companies, organisations in civil society and other disciplines, and produce practice-oriented solutions for society and industry. Networking with other academic staff plays an important role in developing these interdisciplinary research projects.

...participate in shaping and developing the university

Besides teaching and research, you can also participate directly in the further development and organisation of the university through various committees, for example:

  • as the dean or vice-dean of a degree programme or faculty
  • as an elected representative in the Senate or the University Board of Executives

When professional experience counts...

You don't have to have a habilitation degree to apply for an HAW professorship, because it's your professional experience that counts. In addition to a doctorate, five years of professional experience are required after your first university degree − at least three of which must be outside a university.

Prerequisites for an HAW professorship

§ 47 of the Baden-Württemberg State Higher Education Act

In addition to professional and social skills:

  • Completed relevant university degree
  • Special academic qualifications: Doctorate or equivalent qualification for academic or artistic work (e.g. achievements appropriate to a doctorate such as academic publications).
  • Pedagogical aptitude: Teaching experience, i.e. proof of pedagogical aptitude through experience in teaching or in vocational training and further education
  • Professional experience: At least five years of professional experience after the relevant university degree, of which at least three years outside a university

The biographies of HAW professors can be very different − the order does not matter.

If you obtained your university degree abroad, please also enclose a certificate evaluation from the Central Office for Foreign Education (ZAB) with your application documents.
