Productions for VR or the big screen

S3D is the abbreviation for “stereoscopic 3D” and stands for all types of computer graphics and film productions in which images with different perspectives are created for both human eyes. When viewing S3D images, an impressive spatial depth effect is created.

The S3D Postproduction Lab offers a comprehensive environment for such productions and immersive, digitally simulated content. Both virtual and augmented reality techniques are tested here.

Students learn about all production steps here, from recording to post-production. Perception tests for stereoscopic content are carried out under optimal conditions in order to test the quality and effect of the media.

Purpose of lab

The S3D Post-production Laboratory is used for the following teaching and production activities:

  • introducing students to all steps of S3D production
  • carrying out perception tests for stereoscopic content (VR/AR, S3D) under controlled conditions

Lab equipment

  • Stereo camera rigs in side-by-side (Redrock) and mirror (Swissrig) arrangement
  • In-house programmed S3D calculator
  • Mobile S3D recording server with integrated alignment control, Postpro notebook
  • Central NAS for distributed post-production (local or remote), workflow management
  • Unity/SteamVR, Cinema4D and Blender, Adobe Creative Suite, NukeX with numerous plug-ins in the latest version on all computers
  • Test station for stereoscopic subject testing
  • Various VR/AR headsets with integrated eye tracking
  • 5 high-performance workstations, 2 x 27-inch monitors per workstation
  • 50-inch S3D TV screen
  • an additional four classic post-production workstations in case of capacity bottlenecks in the post-production lab
