Lightweight Construction Lab

to the research institutes

Light, clever, sustainable

The Lightweight Construction Lab, which is currently under construction, will provide a development and validation environment for lightweight structures and materials. The laboratory will offer opportunities for practical teaching, applied research and partnerships and projects with companies.

Areas of specialisation

Using simulation and testing, we work on the …

  • identification of lightweight design potential for existing products and products under development
  • development of lightweight components and structures, taking into account the overall system
  • development of and with sustainable materials and material combinations
  • analysis and increased robustness of composite materials.

Lab equipment

The laboratory offers possibilities for, among other things:

  • Simulation-based design: finite element method, multi-body simulation, structural optimisation (topology, shape)
  • Manufacturing: selective laser sintering, fused deposition modeling, tool and mould making, autoclave, …
  • Testing and validation: microscope, solar simulator, …
  • In cooperation with the other HFU laboratories, it is also possible to integrate sensors into composite structures, surface treatment and materials science investigations.
