Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), known as “forever chemicals,” pose significant health and environmental risks due to their high persistence and accumulation in the environment. Against the backdrop of increasingly stringent European regulations, the Wa2MOS project aims to develop an innovative, portable device for the continuous monitoring of PFAS in aqueous systems. The focus is on wastewater applications, both at the inlet of sewage treatment plants and at industrial discharge points, in order to detect contamination at an early stage and prevent environmental damage. The measurement is based on compact fluorine-19 NMR technology, which allows sensitive on-site detection of various PFAS at low concentrations.
The Institute for Microsystems Technology (iMST) at HFU, headed by Prof. Volker Bucher, is primarily responsible for the miniaturisation of the system and the development and integration of the sensor and coil technology. Together with the ICube Institute at the University of Strasbourg (UNISTRA/CNRS), Wa2MOS is making an important contribution to sustainable water monitoring.
