Substitute for fossil carbon compounds

Additive-manufactured, CO2-adsorbent-saturated, regenerable porous structures for carbon capture and utilization of CO2 from industrial point sources

The overall goal of the project is to develop a scalable technology combining additive manufacturing and chemical process engineering to convert CO2 from industrial point sources, such as power plants, into usable raw materials. This addresses the urgent need to replace fossil carbon sources such as oil, natural gas and coal.

Recapture's solution is based on the use of porous, foam-like structures with large internal surfaces that bind CO2 very well. In this way, the CO2 can be stored, converted into chemical compounds, and made usable. To this end, the KSF (Institute for Advanced Manufacturing) and the Institute of Precision Medicine are collaborating at Furtwangen University. The end result of the project will be a laboratory facility to demonstrate the new technology, which will be transferred to industrial practice in follow-up projects. This will create a new carbon source to replace oil, natural gas and coal.
