Resilient in times of change

Innovation-oriented transformation strategies for non-research-intensive medium-sized industrial companies in rural regions of Baden-Württemberg

The project focuses on the particular transformation challenges faced by so-called low-tech companies, i.e., small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) without their own or regular R&D activities, in rural areas of Baden-Württemberg. These companies are key suppliers and innovation partners in key industries, but are under considerable pressure to adapt in the face of digitalisation, structural change, and a shortage of skilled workers.

The aim of the Lowtech Transformation project is to develop resilient, innovation-oriented transformation strategies that are tailored to the specific conditions of these companies and regions. Particular attention is paid to future skills, digital learning processes, and skills development.

As project coordinator, HFU is collaborating on this project with Karlsruhe University of Applied Sciences and Nürtingen-Geislingen University. HFU is responsible for conducting expert interviews and workshops with corporate partners. The focus here is on identifying key drivers and barriers to transformation in low-tech companies. In addition, a broad empirical validation of the transformation paths developed in the project will be carried out later in the project using a nationwide company survey.

Methodologically, the project combines qualitative and quantitative approaches to develop resilient transformation strategies and practical tools for low-tech companies.
