3rd place in the Neura Robotics Challenge
Furtwangen University is among the winners of this year's Neura Robotics Challenge. The interdisciplinary project team “HOP!” achieved an outstanding third place among 15 international finalists and was awarded prize money of €25,000 at the “AI Palooza” in Esslingen. The money will go directly to the newly founded “HFU Medical Robotics Lab” run by Prof. Dr. Massimo Kubon and Clemens Sailer, enabling the continuation and expansion of innovative research projects in the field of medical technology and robotics.
A special bonus − the “MiRA” cobot from Neura Robotics used for the project will remain at HFU free of charge for another year for research purposes. This will enable the team to further expand the AI-supported, semi-autonomous assistance for surgical procedures – such as carpal tunnel surgery – developed in the project, and to open up further fields of application. The aim of further projects in the Medical Robotics Lab is to integrate cobots seamlessly into the operating room environment without having to redesign the infrastructure of the operating room.
Clemens Sailer (research assistant and HFU graduate) was responsible for the technology side of the project under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Massimo Kubon and Prof. Dr. Michael Engler, with technical support from Prof. Dr. Jörg Friedrich.
Participation in the Neura Robotics Challenge and AI Palooza also offered valuable opportunities to network with international teams, experts in the field of modern robotics, and Neura Robotics itself. The course has already been set for further collaboration with the HFU Medical Robotics Lab − an exciting prospect for future joint research activities in the field of humanoid robots in the operating room.
