Doctoral supervision at Furtwangen University expands

The number of professors at Furtwangen University who are entitled to award doctorates in the BW-CAR Doctoral Association is steadily increasing. In order to be accepted into the association, applicants must demonstrate their qualifications through publications and third-party funding.

Prof. Dr. Verena Wagner-Hartl has also been accepted as a member of the doctoral association. The psychologist, who has been working at HFU since 2017, is involved as (deputy) Dean of Studies in the engineering psychology and human factors programmes on the Tuttlingen campus. Before joining HFU, she was involved in research for major automobile manufacturers and the University of Graz. At HFU, Wagner-Hartl has conducted research in various projects on the interaction between humans and machines/robotics, product design, and user experience, and she also incorporates her experience directly into her teaching. She is looking forward to supervising doctoral students as their advisor and to being able to offer the entire academic path at HFU in her department.

Furtwangen University supports its students through all stages of their academic careers – from bachelor's and master's degrees to doctorates. It is one of the strongest research universities for applied sciences in Baden-Württemberg. Numerous professors work inside and outside of 14 quality-assured research institutes on a wide range of projects, most of which are funded by third parties. Currently, around 90 doctoral projects are being supervised at the HFU faculties. Most doctoral students are involved in a project during their doctoral studies. This secures the financing of their doctorate and often allows them to directly apply the knowledge and skills they acquire in the project to their own research. Above all, working in a project team helps with professional networking and enables intensive and competent supervision.

The university also supports its early-career researchers in all phases of their careers through the Interdisciplinary Graduate Institute, which is part of the research funding programme and particularly strengthens networking among doctoral candidates. Members benefit from additional interdisciplinary support initiatives, such as workshops in scientific writing or dissertation defense training to prepare them to defend their dissertations.
