Climate protection at HFU

For us, climate protection is more than just a requirement

Climate protection as a sub-area of sustainability plays an important role in today's world. For this reason, Furtwangen University laid the foundation for climate protection at the university in 2021 with the appointment of the Executive Board's Climate Protection Officer, Prof. Dr. Ulrich Gloistein, and his deputy, Prof. Dr. Ulrike Salat. In the same year, the Senate Committee for Sustainability was founded, in which representatives of the faculties and institutions discuss and promote important sustainability issues at HFU.

Since August 2022, Dr. Sandy-Cheril Manton has been assigned to the Constance construction district as Climate Protection Manager in the state network. Dr. Manton is responsible for four universities in the area of climate protection management. She is based at the Furtwangen University of Applied Sciences in Schwenningen.

The “HFU Climate Neutral” funding project of the National Climate Initiative (NKI) started at the beginning of 2023. As part of this project, the team was expanded by two positions. Maren Gernsheimer (responsible for Schwenningen, Tuttlingen and Rottweil) and Nico Eisenkrämer (responsible for Furtwangen and Freiburg) developed an integrative climate protection concept for the university in the first funding phase until the end of 2024. This shows the university's intended path to achieving the specified climate targets. Since January 2025, the project has been receiving follow-up funding to implement the identified measures and consolidate climate protection and sustainability in all areas of the university.

On behalf of the Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts (MWK), she is involved in the working groups for CO2 balancing and energy and climate protection concepts at universities and supports funding applications. In addition, Dr. Manton organises networking events at universities and promotes communication between stakeholders.

Climate-neutral HFU

As climate protection managers, Maren Gernsheimer and Nico Eisenkrämer have been involved in the “HFU Climate Neutral” project funded by the National Climate Initiative (NKI) since 2023. The aim is to achieve the climate targets and the associated reduction in greenhouse gas emissions to achieve a climate-neutral university.

The first funding phase was successfully completed in January 2025 with the creation of an integrative climate protection concept. This concept includes the initial balancing of greenhouse gas emissions as well as a catalogue of savings measures, which were prepared in a climate pathway.

Since 2008, the German government has initiated and promoted numerous projects contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions through the National Climate Protection Initiative.

Its programmes and projects cover a wide range of climate protection activities − from the development of long-term strategies, to concrete assistance and investment support measures. This diversity guarantees good ideas. The National Climate Protection Initiative helps to anchor climate protection locally, benefiting consumers, companies, municipalities and educational institutions.
