to HFU News

Joint event with Villingen-Schwenningen DHBW

On Tuesday, 21 April, 2026, Furtwangen University and the DHBW Villingen-Schwenningen will be hosting a book presentation of “The Case against Climate Doom – An Economist’s Guide to Climate Optimism” by Dr. Michael Jakob.

In it, the renowned economist advocates for a nuanced perspective on the climate debate and explains why there is reason for optimism despite the immense challenges.

During the event, Dr. Jakob will provide insights into the central arguments of his book and will then invite the audience to join in a discussion.

About the book: The dangers of climate change are becoming increasingly apparent. Nevertheless, we have not yet succeeded in reducing global greenhouse gas emissions. This book therefore aims to highlight important progress in climate protection that has been achieved in recent years but unfortunately often receives too little attention in the public debate. It focuses on encouraging technological, social and political developments and discusses how we can advance climate protection in areas where we are still lagging behind.

About the author: Dr. Michael Jakob is a climate economist and has been active in research, consulting and teaching on sustainable development for over 15 years. His work centers on the question of how climate protection measures can be designed to be socially just and politically feasible. He holds degrees in physics, economics and international relations, as well as a PhD in environmental economics. Dr. Jakob has worked at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, the Mercator Research Institute on Global Commons and Climate Change, and as a visiting scholar at MIT, among other institutions. He also advises governments and international organisations, has authored several IPCC reports, and regularly teaches as a visiting lecturer at the Hertie School in Berlin.

The presentation which is part of the joint event series “PERSPEKTIVE:N Sustainability in Dialogue” organised by both universities, will start at 5.30pm.

Everyone is welcome to attend the free event in the Schmalenbach lecture hall, D Building (Friedrich-Ebert-Straße 30) at the DHBW in Schwenningen.
