Insights into the Midwifery Science degree programme
The first Midwifery Science graduates at Furtwangen University
They made it! The first 30 students on the Midwifery Science programme at Furtwangen University (HFU) have just completed their degrees. They've completed a challenging course of study, having obtained two degrees in seven semesters − a Bachelor of Science and a professional licence as a state-approved midwife. In addition to the course content, which HFU teaches on the Furtwangen Campus in state-of-the-art facilities, the students have also gained practical experience, for example in clinics and with freelance midwives.
“We are very proud of our first midwifery cohort. When you offer a degree programme for the first time, you always learn a lot yourself, which was also special for us,” says course director Katharina Räuber-Dreier.
Furtwangen University was one of the first universities to offer midwifery studies − the first 30 students enrolled in Winter Semester 2021/22. The career opportunities for graduates are diverse. For example they can work as employees or freelancers offering the entire spectrum of care from pregnancy and birth, to the postpartum period and breastfeeding, or parts thereof. Or they may choose to work in scientific midwifery research or as an instructor for expectant midwives. Some of the graduates already started their careers on 1 March.
“Congratulations to the graduates and all the best for this new phase of their lives. They have achieved great things and I am sure they will be excellent companions to many families,” says Katharina Räuber-Dreier as she bids them farewell.
