New technologies in nursing

Technology identification, interface management and knowledge transfer for the further development of nursing practice

Due to demographic, social and facility-related changes, nursing care is under enormous pressure to act − a rapidly increasing number of people in need of care are faced with too few nursing and assistance staff, while nursing interventions are becoming increasingly complex. In order to meet these challenges, overarching, multi-professional cooperation between different service providers and professions is required. Technological innovations open up new opportunities to support and improve nursing care.

As part of the BMBF-funded “Future of Nursing” cluster, various technological innovations and methods are being developed in parallel and integrated and evaluated in nursing practice while at the same time creating the necessary qualification requirements. Although some existing technologies have proven to be effective under certain conditions, they have not yet been widely used in nursing practice outside the cluster.

The aim is to systematically develop technological innovations in order to overcome sector boundaries between different care settings and to provide technological support for coordinated care along care pathways.

At the heart of the transfer activities is the so-called buddy concept, which is already being used successfully in the UK. Here, suitable partner institutions are accompanied in the digitalisation process and supported as multipliers, with the close involvement of experience providers from the cluster. In order for technological innovations to be used in nursing practice, training courses to promote technical skills must be offered throughout the entire nursing education sector. The concepts and materials developed to date for the various types and levels of qualification in relation to technology skills are to be transferred and adapted to other institutions.

In addition, the transfer of knowledge will be expanded and supplemented by a think tank, which will serve as an interface for new, external impulses and enable systematic networking of the cluster with other (inter)national players.
