“Long Night of Writing” on 3 December at Furtwangen University
Writing enthusiasts and those who want to become one can gain insights into academic writing at the “Long Night of Writing” at Furtwangen University (HFU) in Schwenningen. Experts from a wide range of disciplines offer participants a varied programme consisting of lectures, workshops, and exchange formats. “There are three 45-minute content blocks in which participants can choose between different workshop items that take place simultaneously. This allows everyone interested to put together their own individual programme,” explains Katharina Hertfelder, certified writing consultant at HFU and initiator of the event.
Dr. Christoph Zydorek, professor of media economics, will give a lecture on “The use of AI in academic writing.” He will explain what academic integrity is and what needs to be considered in order to maintain it when using AI. Afterwards, he will invite participants to engage in a discussion during a question and answer session. Other lecture topics include “Tips and tricks for scientific texts,” “Basic knowledge about citations, plagiarism, and more,” “AI-supported writing strategies,” and “Of blank pages and big words: writing myths from an international perspective.”
“The ‘Long Night of Writing’ is aimed at anyone who wants to improve their writing skills, which is why there are offers in German and English from more than a dozen experts,” says Katharina Hertfelder.
Cooperation partner and founder of the Public Science Lab, Professor Dr. Stefan Selke, invites participants to a workshop lasting several hours entitled "Be a voice – not an echo! – Optimistic Messages for the Future on Vinyl." Participants will have the opportunity to explore a new dimension of writing by composing messages for a better future and expressing them in the form of audio recordings of their own voices. Participants should bring a laptop or tablet and a smartphone for recording the audio messages. There will also be workshops on literature and database research, conscious nutrition while writing, and many other interesting topics to choose from.
“Writing is not rocket science, and that's exactly what the ‘Long Night of Writing’ makes tangible; good writing skills – whether in science or outside of it – are a matter of practice, and practice takes time,” explains Katharina Hertfelder. For this reason, the “Long Night of Writing” also includes time for individual and collaborative writing, including impulse exercises. IT support is also offered for installing and getting started with the literature management programme Citavi. Between the presentation blocks, Maximilian Federer from HFU's occupational health management team invites participants to take “active breaks.”
The event will take place on Wednesday, 3 December, from 6.00 - 10.00pm in the F Building on the Schwenningen campus of Furtwangen University. Everyone is to attend this free event. The “Long Night of Writing” is organised by the HFU Library and the HFU CARES Writing Center, with support from the Public Science Lab as a cooperation partner.
