Research on AI and VR

Furtwangen University presented the latest developments in medical technology and the application of artificial intelligence at this year's InnovationForum Medizintechnik, organised by MedicalMountains GmbH. HFU showcased current research projects in the fields of applied medical technology and technology transfer. These ranged from data-driven oncology to immersive learning environments in education.

A central exhibit was the “Demonstrating Distributed AI in Oncology” demonstration system, developed as part of the CoHMed project KIO (“AI Analysis of Oncology Data”). Among other things, the project investigates how data from various registries can be analysed using AI methods without exchanging sensitive patient data. The aim is to open up new avenues for data protection, personalised medicine and clinical decision-making.

In addition to the exhibits, HFU also contributed two specialist presentations to the Innovation Forum program: Prof. Dr. Holger Ziekow spoke on “Artificial intelligence for the evaluation of cancer registry data.” He demonstrated how intelligent algorithms can be used to gain new insights from extensive registry data. The research aims to improve the quality of analysis in cancer

The "OpTA-VA" VR training platform was also presented. The project illustrates how virtual reality creates realistic training scenarios for surgical assistants. Interactive simulations enable practical learning and sustainably enhance the quality of training.

The InnovationForum Medizintechnik is considered one of the most important industry meeting places in Europe and brings together companies, start-ups, research institutions, and students from the HFU. The HFU uses the platform to present current research results, deepen cooperation opportunities and provide impetus for new innovation projects. “Every year, the forum demonstrates how strongly Tuttlingen and HFU are networked in the field of medical technology. We are delighted to be able to present some of our current projects and expertise directly on site,” said Prof. Dr. Hadi Mozaffari-Jovein, new partnership spokesperson for CoHMed (Connected Health in Medical Mountains), the innovation and transfer partnership of HFU.
