Displays in the butterfly house on the island of Mainau

"Farfalle Digitale" in the butterfly house on the island of Mainau

From 21 to 27 July, 17,500 visitors experienced the media installation “Farfalle Digitale” by Sebastiana Augenstein, a graduate of the School of Design and Media at Furtwangen University, on the island of Mainau.

The unique sensory world of butterflies and their ability to perceive ultraviolet light and communicate via their wings inspired the graduate to create animated visualizations of her own macro photographs. These were displayed on several screens – provided by a2r:media GbR, Konstanz – offering a close-up view of the delicate structures, colours, and movements of the wings.

Particular praise was given to the unobtrusive integration of the media installation into the natural environment of the butterfly house, as well as the depth of detail in the macro photographs used.

The work was created as part of Sebastiana Augenstein's bachelor's thesis in the Online Media programme at the HFU School of Design and Media. The thesis was supervised by Prof. Thomas Krach and Prof. Regina Reusch.
