From experiment to becoming integral part of HFU

Artificial intelligence has long been more than just a trend at Furtwangen University – its use is actively shaped and meaningfully integrated into degree programmes and teaching. By participating in the state-wide pilot project bwGPT, HFU laid the foundation for the use of generative AI in compliance with data protection regulations at an early stage. Starting in the 2025/26 winter semester, bwGPT will be available to all university members. Teachers will be able to integrate AI-supported assistants directly into their courses to help students with organisational and content-related questions – an important step toward a modern and intelligent learning environment.

To ensure that the use of AI in teaching is successful and that the opportunities and challenges are consciously reflected upon, the Center for Teaching and Learning (ZLL) supports teachers and students with a wide range of support services. These include guidelines, self-study courses, and workshops on the didactically meaningful use of generative AI. Additional handouts and practical examples related to teaching and learning with AI are also available on HFU Insight.

A look into the future shows that AI is also being considered in the further development of the degree programme portfolio, and AI skills are being systematically integrated into existing and new curricula. In curriculum workshops, methods are being developed together with teachers to integrate AI skills into degree programmes and individual teaching formats in a meaningful, subject-specific, and future-oriented manner.

In curriculum workshops, teachers work together to develop ways of integrating AI skills into degree programmes and individual teaching formats in a meaningful, subject-specific, and future-oriented manner. Innovative teaching formats also prepare HFU students specifically for a digitally-driven professional world.
