Prof. Dr. Jana Strahler giving her presentation
New ideas, exchange, and networking
New impetus for collaboration was the focus of the first “Research Day” at the Freiburg Study Center of Furtwangen University (HFU). The event was aimed at researchers and staff from the Faculty of Health, Medical & Life Sciences. In 18 short presentations followed by Q&A sessions, the diversity and breadth of research activities within the faculty was highlighted. Among other things, the implementation of a virtual reality intervention for the physiotherapeutic care of people with chronic pain was presented. Other topics ranged from microbiome analysis, the study of microorganisms in the human intestine, to blood vessel models that can be used to test cancer drugs against metastasis. There were also exciting ideas from the fields of safety, fire protection, and care, which met with lively interest among the participants.
A central component of the event was the networking format “Research Meets Research,” in which randomly assembled small groups discussed specific questions. “In my room, for example, we talked about future research topics and visions of the working groups within the faculty,” reports Prof. Dr. Marie Ottilie Frenkel, Vice-Dean for Research and Transfer and initiator of the event. "The poster walk with 31 posters and keynote speeches by students from our faculty was also particularly varied.
Prof. Dr. Jana Strahler from the Institute for Sports and Sports Science at the University of Freiburg gave the keynote speech “Gender Data Gap in Sports.” In it, she drew attention to the lack of female coaches for male athletes and addressed gender-specific inequalities in medicine.
“Today, we not only showcased our diverse research activities, but above all strengthened the exchange between disciplines, locations, and between young and experienced researchers,” says Frenkel. “We received a great deal of positive feedback, so we are considering holding the Research Day regularly in the future,” summarises Prof. Dr. Margareta Müller, Dean of the Faculty of Health, Medical & Life Sciences.
“Health and health technologies are the major topics of the future in our research,” says Prof. Christoph Reich, Vice-President for Research at Furtwangen University. “Networking meetings within the university and with our numerous cooperation partners help us to focus on current issues, find solutions together, and promote interoperability between systems and institutional actors in the long term.”
