13th Hacking Workshop at Furtwangen University

Attack is the best defense. 27 students from Furtwangen University (HFU) and two pupils from Waldkirch High School were able to experience this for themselves at the 13th “Hack2Improve” workshop at HFU on 4 April 2025. Led by two professionals from SEC Consult, a leading global consultancy firm in the field of cyber and application security, the participants spent the morning trying to penetrate a digital network. Under the slogan “May the good hacking power be with you”, they gradually took control. In the afternoon, they switched to defending themselves, analysing their own attacks and taking countermeasures. “This event was great because I was able to try out lots of things and get to know the tools and tricks of the professionals,” summarised one of the participants.

This was already the 13th “Hack2Improve” workshop. The aim of the annual event is to give participants an understanding of the risks and the implementation of security and defense strategies. “In today's digital and networked world, cyberattacks are a constant and major threat, which is why the focus of the workshop is on making them,” says Prof. Dr. Olaf Neiße, who leads the workshop together with Prof. Dr. Richard Zahoransky. He emphasises, “Thanks to our industry partnerships, we can offer participants the perfect framework conditions to try things out, as well as the latest know-how.”

Furtwangen University offers a “Cyber Security” bachelor's degree programme, which focuses on know-how in the area of cyber attacks, security and defense measures.
