Successful workshop with future ward managers

In January, an exciting teaching unit took place as part of the further training for ward managers at Freiburg University Hospital. Thirty committed participants dealt intensively with the introduction of new technologies in a nursing context.

The focus was on the application of a recommendation for action published in the Freiburg Nursing Practice Center (PPZ) project of the Care and Technology Lab (IMTT) at Furtwangen University, which was specially developed to identify stumbling blocks at an early stage when introducing new technologies in acute inpatient care and to develop solutions based on this. Two technologies that have already been piloted at the Freiburg Care Practice Center were considered as practical examples − the Mobility Monitor motion sensor and the Double 3 telepresence robot. The group was divided into two teams so that each half analysed a fictitious introduction of the technologies in a specific setting based on the recommended action.

The aim was to identify typical challenges when implementing such innovations in everyday ward life. Aspects such as acceptance within the team, training needs, technical requirements and organisational framework conditions were discussed. The participants worked together to develop practical approaches and gained valuable ideas for their future role as ward managers. The unit impressively demonstrated the importance of structured reflection and planning.
