Research with a difference - HFU project helps young people find words to combat climate fears
The climate crisis is not only a challenge for politics and science, but also for the psyche. Young people in particular are increasingly feeling the effects of environmental changes on their daily lives and see their own future at risk. Furtwangen University is launching an unusual event as part of its “ MoodLab” research project to deal with this topic − the “Muffensausen” (Grumpiness) workshop and poetry slam. The workshop which will take place on 31 January and 1 February, 2025, is aimed at young people between the ages of 15 and 25. Under the guidance of author and sound poet Dirk Hülstrunk, participants will learn how to transform their thoughts, wishes and fears into impressive slam texts. On the evening of 1 February, the up-and-coming poets will have the opportunity to present their work to the public at the “Muffensausen Poetry Slam” at K3 in Villingen-Schwenningen − an evening that will not only make you think, but will also lead to an exchange of ideas and networking.
“Muffensausen” stands for the feeling of respect or even fear of major challenges − a topic that is more topical than ever in times of climate crisis, growing social inequalities and global upheaval. In the workshop, the young people learn how to put their thoughts on paper creatively and effectively and ultimately on stage. Whether it's about climate chaos, fears of the future or their own hopes, the focus is on creating a space for honest, courageous and perhaps uncomfortable voices.
The workshop will take place on 31 January from 2.00 - 6.00pm and on 1 February 1 from 10.00am - 2.00pm. The participation fee is €5.00 for both days. The public “Muffensausen Poetry Slam” begins at 7.00pm on 1 February at K3 in Villingen-Schwenningen. Musician “Fluse” from Berlin will also be taking part. Workshop participants can even win a prize − the best performance will be awarded €100.00! As a special service − a shuttle bus will take participants safely back and forth between St. Georgen and K3.
The event is part of Furtwangen University's health science “MoodLab” research project, which uses various forms of artistic expression to try and overcome society's speechlessness in the face of crisis scenarios. The aim is to give young people a voice and promote collective action through artistic forms of expression.
Places in the workshop are limited (maximum 15 people) so registration is required. Register now at Email application is started:muffensausen(at)hs-furtwangen.de and receive further information.
