Dr Stodt with his doctoral certificate

Jan Stodt awarded PhD for research into explainability of artificial intelligence

Dr. Jan Stodt has been awarded a doctorate for the research he carried out at Furtwangen University at the Institute for Data Science, Cloud Computing and IT Security (IDACUS), in partnership with the University of Plymouth in England. The defense took place on 12 July, 2024, and the title was officially awarded to him on 5 December, 2024.

Artificial neural networks have achieved great success, but face challenges in transparency and user trust due to their “black box” nature. The dissertation examines the weaknesses of existing methods of explainable AI (XAI) and develops domain-specific approaches that better integrate technical knowledge and user needs. One focus is on automating the integration of domain knowledge in order to provide more precise and meaningful explanations. The work thus makes an important contribution to making XAI more user-friendly and transparent.
