And this is how it works

Procedure

How does the study-related trainee programme work?

Trainees and companies have the option of adapting the study-accompanying trainee programme to their individual requirements. Using the example of the M/5-50 variant with 50 weeks of practical experience and a duration of 5 semesters and our fictitious student Mia Maier as an example, we will show you how a trainee programme at HFU could work:

1. The application

Our bachelor's degree programmes usually last seven semesters. In the first two semesters, the subject-specific basics for the main course are taught. Mia Maier has just started her studies at HFU. During her first semester, she learns about our study-related trainee programme. She is interested and is looking for an attractive company that matches her degree programme. Her unsolicited application is successful and she is invited to an interview.

2 The conclusion of the contract

In our example, our student Mia Müller and our partner company decide to start the trainee programme during her third semester. During the second semester, they conclude a contract based on the HFU model contract.

3. Practical and thesis semester in the company

The contract stipulates that Mia Maier spends her practical semester (usually the fifth semester) at the company. She will also write her thesis at the company in the seventh semester.

4 Planning the practical phases in the remaining semesters

The trainee and the company plan the practical phase directly after the examination period. This allows Mia to take a well-deserved holiday before the lectures of the next semester begin.

In the other semesters, Mia and the company decide when she spends additional practical phases during the lecture-free period. During the lecture and examination period, the company cannot rely on Ms Maier. This is a good thing, because she should concentrate on her studies during this time. She can then devote herself fully to the company and recover during the remaining lecture-free period.

5 The fully planned course of the student trainee programme

Mia and the company determine when Mia will spend practical phases at the company before the start of the study-accompanying trainee programme. In her case, this is a total of 50 weeks spread over five semesters. In return, she receives money every month from the start of the programme, regardless of whether she is currently working at the company or not. In total, she will receive around €25,000 over the course of her studies. The company, on the other hand, knows that it can rely on Mia and give her sound practical insights. So both benefit.

Programme variants

Different programme variants allow the interests and opportunities of the trainee and the company to be taken into account precisely. The standard duration of the programme is 4, 5, 6 or 7 semesters . Accordingly, practical phases with a total duration of 40, 50, 60 or 70 weeks are carried out in the company. It is therefore possible to start the programme at the beginning of the 1st semester, but it can also take place in the 2nd or 3rd semester or in the 4th semester at the latest. In special cases, a duration of 8 semesters with an 80-week practical phase can also be agreed – an additional practical semester is then completed.

In all programme variants, the trainees complete both their practical semester (usually in the 4th or 5th semester) and their final thesis (usually in the 7th semester) in the company. In addition, they actively work on current company projects during part of the semester break, gaining valuable additional practical experience.

The following table summarises the most important key figures and features of the programme variants. The distribution of the practical phases over the curriculum semesters can be arranged individually. We are happy to help!

Programme partners

In principle, all bachelor's degree programmes at Furtwangen University can be combined with a trainee programme. The list of our partner companies is intended as an initial guide, but is not exhaustive. If you as a company are interested in being listed here, please do not hesitate to contact us. And students can of course also approach other companies.
