Workplace Safety: Safe Handling of Hydrogen and Explosion Protection

all professional development programmes

What to do in an emergency

This professional development course provides practical training in the fundamentals of safe hydrogen handling. It focuses on the physical and chemical properties of H₂, typical applications and system limitations, explosion and fire protection, relevant regulations, and safety and operational concepts. Real-world incidents and the “lessons learned” derived from them demonstrate how risks can be identified, protective measures prioritised, and safety-critical situations appropriately assessed.

  • Qualification: Certificate
  • ECTS: 1 ECTS
  • Programme duration: 3 hours
  • Programme location: Tuttlingen
  • Programme date: 29.10.2026, 4.00 - 7.00pm
  • Registration deadline: 15.10.2026
  • Tuition fees: Participation is free. This programme is funded by the AuToS SW-BW project.
  • Teaching language: German
  • Delivery type: In-person
  • Understand hydrogen Participants will learn about the key physical and chemical properties of hydrogen, as well as its distinctive characteristics compared to other gases, and will categorise its production, storage, distribution, transportation and use.
  • Calculate explosion risk Terms, prerequisites, and ignition sources are explained systematically. Participants learn about measures to prevent explosive atmospheres, Ex zones, and design-based protection concepts.
  • Apply regulations ATEX, BetrSichV, BImSchG, and selected requirements for gas stations and vehicles — such as ISO 19880 and UN R134 — are categorised with a focus on practical applications.
  • Act confidently in an emergency Leak detection, sensor technology, jet flames, pressure relief, hydrogen fires, and human error are addressed in a practical manner using typical scenarios and real-life incidents.

Details of the training course

Learning objectives and content

The course covers the properties and applications of hydrogen, the fundamentals of explosion protection, the conditions required for explosions and potential ignition sources, Ex zones and structural explosion protection, safety concepts and explosion protection documentation, selected regulations, and safety-related requirements for gas stations and vehicles. Additional topics include leak detection, sensor technology, jet flames, behaviour during hydrogen fires, human error, and “lessons learned” from real-world incidents.

Target group and prerequisites

The training course is aimed at engineers, technicians, and specialists from the industrial, energy, chemical, and mechanical engineering sectors; safety and fire protection officers; operators of hydrogen-related facilities; planners and project managers for H₂ facilities; refueling stations, and PtG systems; firefighters and emergency responders; as well as students and those interested in advanced training related to H₂ projects. The course is designed as an introductory and foundational programme; no specific prior knowledge is required.

Prerequisites

Admission to a professional development course generally requires a college degree or vocational training in a relevant field, as well as at least one year of professional experience.

Format

The session is scheduled to last three hours, from 4.00 - 7.00pm. The training programme structures the technical content into:

  • a brief introduction
  • the fundamentals of hydrogen
  • an in-depth introduction to explosion protection
  • and operational and safety concepts, including current developments.

Real-world incidents and application examples are used to facilitate practical application. The presentation slides will be provided as a PDF, including a list of sources and a bibliography, for independent review. Afterwards, participants will complete an online multiple-choice test consisting of 10 questions.

Qualification

Upon passing the multiple-choice test, you will receive a recognised certificate from Furtwangen University worth 1 ECTS credit.

AuToS SW-BW - For a sustainable automotive and technology hub

AuToS logo

With over 25,000 jobs in the automotive industry, the Schwarzwald-Baar-Heuberg region ranks among Germany’s top 100 automotive regions. The predominantly small and medium-sized suppliers are, in part, facing significant pressure to transform due to their focus on mechanically manufactured components and their status as Tier 2 or 3 suppliers. At the same time, innovative pioneers can be identified in key future-oriented fields.

This is where the automotive initiative “AuToS SW-BW” comes in. The project stands for “Automotive Transformation Strategy for Southwest Baden-Württemberg.” Together with the many small and medium-sized enterprises, the goal is to create a visible network of the regional automotive industry with a strong voice, to align business models with the future, to train employees, and to transfer knowledge.

The goal is to develop the Schwarzwald-Baar-Heuberg region into a sustainable and future-proof automotive and technology hub with innovative, medium-sized suppliers.
