Teaching applications
Generative AI opens up new possibilities for teaching, research and medical practice. In this practice-oriented online workshop, participants will learn how to use modern AI tools safely, in compliance with data protection regulations and in accordance with regulatory requirements, to create medical teaching and working materials.
Learning outcomes and content
Day 1 – Fundamentals (live online):
- How generative AI works: LLMs, diffusion models, multimodal models
- Tool landscape 2026: local open-source tools (Ollama, Open-WebUI, ComfyUI) vs. commercial providers
- Gold standards for AI deployment: tool selection and data classification, prompt engineering, output validation, documentation, compliance (EU AI Act), reproducibility
- Hands-on: Working with local language models (Open-WebUI) using examples from everyday clinical and teaching practice
Day 2 – In-depth medical applications (live online):
- GenAI application areas in medicine: teaching and educational materials, diagnostic evaluation, decision support, research, radiology, documentation
- Live demo of a complete pipeline for creating teaching materials (ComfyUI + Flux + medical LoRAs, image-to-3D)
- Gold Standards for Medical AI: MDR classification, patient data protection (GDPR Art. 9), human-in-the-loop, audit trail
- Hands-on: create your own educational images on a topic of your choice
- Final quiz and certificate; introductory tutorial video provided afterwards as a digital handout for further study
After the event, participants will be able to:
- explain how LLMs, diffusion models and multimodal models work
- understand the tool landscape and select tools appropriate to the data class (in compliance with data protection regulations)
- write structured prompts and systematically validate AI outputs
- create their own teaching and educational materials using local open-source tools (Open-WebUI, ComfyUI/Flux)
- understand the MDR classification and the EU AI Act as they apply to medical AI applications
- apply the gold standards for medical AI within their own working context
The certificate also attests to AI competence in accordance with Article 4 of the EU AI Act.
Target group and prerequisites
This continuing professional development programme is aimed at medical educators – in particular professors and lecturers in medical education – who wish to use generative AI to create teaching, illustrative and educational materials. It is also aimed at doctors, healthcare professionals (e.g. medical assistants) and staff working in research and medical technology who wish to integrate AI tools into their day-to-day work in a manner that complies with data protection regulations and meets regulatory requirements.
Prerequisites
Admission to a face-to-face course generally requires a university degree or vocational training in a relevant profession, as well as at least one year’s professional experience.
Format
The workshop takes place over two consecutive half-days online and combines concise expert presentations with live demonstrations and practical hands-on exercises. After learning the basics of generative AI and relevant open-source tools, participants will explore their practical application through medical case studies and create their own teaching and visual materials. The workshop concludes with a multiple-choice quiz leading to a certificate, as well as a digital learning video for further study.
