For graduates of the “Security Engineer, BdSI©” certificate programme
SIMEDIA Academy’s security-focused “Security Engineer, BdSI” course series has been completed in recent years by many specialists and emerging leaders as a key component of professional development for security managers. Thanks to the cooperation between the SIMEDIA Academy and Furtwangen University (HFU), participants have the opportunity − unique in Germany − to have their expertise in developing a comprehensive security concept certified by a university, independent of an engineering degree. This continuing professional development programme teaches practical approaches and methods for creating and optimising holistic security concepts.
Learning objectives and content
The partnership between the SIMEDIA Academy and Furtwangen University (HFU) offers a unique opportunity in Germany to have expertise in developing a comprehensive safety concept certified by a university, independently of an engineering degree programme.

- Aspects of security sciences
- Scientific methods and scientific work
- Risk assessment design
- Fundamentals of a security concept / resilience
- Conflicting objectives: acceptance and participation
- Aspects of security law
- Evaluation and quality assurance
Format
Advanced Seminar (2 days) in Rösrath (Cologne)
Aspects of security studies | Scientific methods and research practices | Designing risk assessments | Fundamentals of a security concept/resilience | Conflicting objectives: acceptance and stakeholder participation | Aspects of security law | Selection of a topic for the final thesis
Start of the thesis (duration: 8 months)
Development of a written security concept of your choice in consultation with your HFU advisor | Gradual submission of draft outlines and partial results according to an agreed milestone plan, accompanied by regular feedback sessions
Online course unit
Topic: “Scientific and methodological work.” Can be completed independently and at your own pace.
In-person event (2 days) in Furtwangen
Interim presentation
Arrival and dinner the evening before. Detailed feedback on the current status of the work results.
Presentation and examination interview
Presentation of the thesis results before an HFU examination committee. Duration: approximately 30 minutes
Qualification
Certified Security Engineer
Qualification
By attending the in-person sessions and completing and presenting a term paper, you will receive a certificate from Furtwangen University.
Completion of the term paper:
- To be completed in consultation with the supervising instructor at HFU
- Submission of draft outlines and interim results in accordance with an agreed-upon milestone plan, accompanied by regular feedback sessions
- Completion of the thesis and written evaluation
- The instructor is available for consultation throughout the entire course.
- Furtwangen University is responsible for verifying that the requirements for awarding the university certificate have been met.
- A 30-minute presentation of the thesis results before an HFU examination committee, as well as a brief evaluation of a “tandem partner’s” thesis.
