Expertise in sports nutrition
For professionals in the fields of health promotion, prevention and rehabilitation
Nutrition and exercise are essential components of good health. Providing nutritional advice to physically active people requires specially trained experts. The part-time “Applied Nutritional Science – Health, Performance, Sports” certificate programmme lasts two semesters and includes both in-person and online phases. It provides in-depth knowledge about the specific role of defined nutritional components and enables participants to support athletes in their leisure time, training and competitions.
Learning objectives and content
After completing the CAS “Applied Nutrition Science – Health, Performance, Sports,” participants will be able to:
- present the fundamentals of nutrition science and use them to clarify nutritional questions
- assess the properties of nutrition (composition, energy content, essential micronutrients)
- describe human metabolism and energy utilization during physical exertion
- distinguish evidence-based nutritional knowledge from nutritional myths
- provide evidence-based nutritional counselling to healthy and physically active target groups (e.g., recreational athletes, active athletes, and sports teams in training and competition)
Target group and prerequisites
Professionals working in the fields of health promotion, prevention and rehabilitation (e.g., physiotherapy, sports science, nutrition science, medicine, health management, and health professions)
Reading skills in English are required; classes are held in German.
Prerequisites
Admission to a contact study programme generally requires a university degree or vocational training in a relevant profession, as well as at least one year of professional experience.

Certificate of Advanced Studies (CAS) from the University of Freiburg (15 ECTS credits)
What is a CAS?
A Certificate of Advanced Studies (CAS) is a continuing education qualification offered by universities, primarily in German-speaking countries (e.g., Switzerland, Germany, Austria).
Objective: To deepen knowledge in a specific subject area.
Structure: Part of a modular system – several CAS can be combined to form a DAS (Diploma of Advanced Studies) or a master's degree.
