Understanding and classifying modern energy storage systems

This continuing education course provides a concise and practical introduction to the design and operation of modern energy storage systems. It focuses on architectural variants, cell chemistries, aging mechanisms and key technical metrics − with regard to industrial applications and current development requirements.

  • Understand system architecture Participants will gain an overview of architectural concepts such as cell-to-module, module-to-pack, and cell-to-pack, as well as the role of the battery management system.
  • Compare cell chemistries Differences between relevant battery chemistries are explained in practical terms based on energy density, safety, cost and cycle life.
  • Assess aging Key aging and damage mechanisms, such as SEI growth and lithium plating, are clearly explained.
  • Interpret key figures accurately Relevant technical data and benchmarks for energy storage systems are explained and made applicable to real-world operations.

  • Architecture: cell-to-module/module-to-pack vs. cell-to-pack

  • Cell chemistry and its differences (energy density, safety, cost, and cycle life)
  • Cell aging and factors influencing it (SEI growth, lithium plating, etc.)
  • Production processes / Manufacturing processes
  • Benchmarking of cells and relevant technical data for energy storage systems
Target group and prerequisites

Suitable for employees in development, design, production, testing, quality management and related fields.

Requirements for participation are:

  • completed vocational training OR
  • a degree from a university of applied sciences
  • In addition, at least one year of professional experience is required.

A basic understanding of technical matters is helpful but not a mandatory requirement.

Format

The plan is to offer a concise training session featuring expert input, real-world examples, and opportunities for questions and discussion.

Qualification

Upon completion, participants will receive a certificate (1 ECTS) from Furtwangen University.

With over 25,000 jobs in the automotive industry, the Schwarzwald-Baar-Heuberg region ranks among Germany’s top 100 automotive regions. The predominantly small and medium-sized suppliers are, in part, facing significant pressure to transform due to their focus on mechanically manufactured components and their status as Tier 2 or 3 suppliers.
