The Diagnostics in Health Promotion module offers professionals working in the fields of health promotion, prevention and rehabilitation the opportunity to deepen or expand their professional skills in the areas of health psychology and health promotion.

Wide range of modern diagnostic procedures From anthropometry to laboratory diagnostics to metabolic performance diagnostics — participants learn about methods, evaluation systems, and their application in health promotion.
Practice-oriented blended learning format A part-time semester with two attendance weekends in Freiburg combines theoretical knowledge with practical implementation and self-study phases.
University certificate with 8 ECTS credits Upon successful completion, participants will receive a certificate from Furtwangen University – with credits that can be counted toward a Certificate of Advanced Studies (CAS).

Learning objectives and content

Content

The module teaches the basic principles, specific applications, and the framework conditions and approaches for interpreting modern health-related diagnostics. This enables participants to offer additional diagnostic options in the field of health promotion and prevention.

Specifically, the module covers the following topics:

Principles of health-related diagnostics
Statistical methods for characterising measurement results (measurement error, reliability, specificity, sensitivity)
Relationship between the benefits, costs, effort, and risks of diagnostic procedures for decision-making on the part of the provider
Billing options for health-related diagnostics (e.g., IGeL) and certification systems of professional associations
Anthropometry as a reference system for health diagnostics
Understanding findings from imaging procedures for basic health-related diagnostics
Simple clinical tests on the musculoskeletal system
Laboratory diagnostics in health promotion
Metabolic performance diagnostics and sports physiology methods (lung function, lactate, respiratory gas analysis, heart rate)
Methods for analysing physical activity (GPS, apps)
Practical interpretation and evaluation systems in health-related diagnostics (analysis software, etc.)
Recommendation and motivation systems for determining and implementing efficient health promotion
Additional diagnostic procedures for detecting specific organ changes in the context of health diagnostics

Objectives

Upon completion of the module, participants will be able to:

name and select modern diagnostic procedures in health promotion (metabolic performance diagnostics, movement analysis, anthropometry, life logging, etc.)
evaluate the most important imaging procedures in terms of effort, cost, and benefit, and name simple diagnostic options
assess diagnostic tests and their probability of error and reliability, and recognize possible interpretations
use clinical functional tests to determine health and physical fitness in health management
defend the results of diagnostic tests
develop strategies to increase the probability of results from diagnostic tests
select diagnostic procedures based on cost-benefit, risk, and effort assessments
select and apply key principles of biometrics
identify and apply the most important billing options for health-related diagnostics

Target group and prerequisites

Professionals working in the fields of health promotion, prevention, and rehabilitation (e.g., physiotherapy, sports science, nutrition science, medicine, health management, and health professions)

Reading skills in English are required; classes are held in German.

Prerequisites

Admission to a contact study programme generally requires a university degree or vocational training in a relevant profession, as well as at least one year of professional experience.

Format

The module is offered in a blended learning format. One semester of part-time study with two weekends of classroom attendance. Together with the module “Management in Health Promotion,” a Certificate of Advanced Studies (CAS) can be earned.

Qualification

To successfully complete the course, students must take a written exam, after which Furtwangen University will issue a certificate of academic continuing education worth 7 ECTS credits. Together with the module Management in Health Promotion, students can earn a Certificate of Advanced Studies (CAS) in Diagnostics and Management in Health Promotion.

What is a CAS?

A CAS is a continuing education qualification awarded by universities, primarily in German-speaking countries (e.g., Switzerland, Germany, Austria).

Objective: To deepen knowledge in a specific subject area.

Structure: Part of a modular system – several CASs can be combined to form a DAS (Diploma of Advanced Studies) or a master's degree.
