Electronic publishing - Open access

We support you in publishing in Open Access journals.

General information about Open Access

The aim of Open Access is to make scientific knowledge accessible free of charge and barrier-free on the internet and to make it reusable in compliance with copyright law.

Publishing Open Access: Golden Path and Green Path

Gold Path

The Gold Path is the initial publication of scientific and scholarly works in open access journals against payment of a publication fee. The publishers usually grant the users blanket rights of subsequent use through already established licences of use, such as External link opens in a new window:CC licences.
If no usage licences are granted, External link opens in a new window:copyright law applies.

Directory of quality-assured open access journals

External link opens in a new window:DOAJ Directory of Open Access Journals

The DOAJ is run by a non-profit organisation and is regarded as a reliable reference system for quality-checked open access journals. It now contains the data of approximately 17,000 peer-reviewed open access journals in all fields of knowledge.

Selecting the right open access journal for your publication

The following websites make it easier to find the right open access journal:

  • B!SON Bibliometric and Semantic Open Access Recommender Network
Recommendation of Open Access journals on the basis of semantic and bibliometric similarity of the text to be published and already published open access publications.

Green Path

The Green Path is the term used to describe the secondary publication of scientific publications that have previously appeared in a (Closed Access) journal. Our External link opens in a new window:OPUS Repository, for example, serves as an Open Access platform.

The repository has been online since 2016 with the main functions of searching, browsing, and publishing.

Documents published in the repository are uniquely identifiable, permanently referenced and available via a persistent identifier (URN: Uniform Resource Name). This means that research results can be made available to the general public freely and without restriction.

OPUS-HFU also takes on the task of a bibliography of all HFU publications, regardless of their publication form.

Another function of the repository is the generation of publication lists of HFU members and HFU institutions and their integration on the corresponding websites.

How-to instructions for publishing in OPUS-HFU can be found here:

Persistent identifiers

Persons and institutions can be uniquely identified by means of a persistent identifier (PID). Data and digital objects become permanently citable and re-usable through persistent identifiers.

For individuals: ORCID Open Researcher and Contributor ID.

ORCID is a directory of unique, persistent identifiers (ID) for researchers that is open, non-profit, transparent, portable and research-oriented. ORCID provides you with a persistent digital ID that distinguishes you from all other researchers and helps you link your professional activities in an automated way.

More information about ORCID:

For data and digital objects: DOI and URN

The Digital Object Identifier (DOI) and the Uniform Resource Name (URN) are the most commonly used identifier systems. These persistent identifiers can be used to locate objects precisely. Scientific results can thus be cited reliably and in a standardised form.

In the university repository, OPUS-HFU these identifiers are generated automatically when publishing.

For institutions: GND and ROR

  • The GND (Gemeinsame Normdatei) is coordinated by the German National Library and maintained jointly by many academic libraries, so that the information is curated. There are initial procedures for linking the GND and ORCID. Among others, Wikipedia Germany uses the GND for referencing.
The External link opens in a new window:GND Explorer will be the new display and research tool for the Common Body of Standards. Access to the beta version is currently available.
For the unique designation and spelling of an institution, there is ROR (Research Organisation Registry).
  • ROR ID of Furtwangen University: https://ror.org/02m11x73
