AI-powered information tool for utilising real-world data in oncology

AI supports cancer care

The NIO project aims to make it easier for oncologists to access valuable insights from real-world data through the use of an AI-based information tool. This data comes from everyday cancer care and offers a rich source of information that has been underutilised until now.

Since randomised trials, on which medical guidelines are based, often do not cover all patients in clinical practice, NIO’s methods are intended to serve as complementary tools. The planned tools support physicians in making treatment decisions by calculating probabilities for treatments based on individual patient characteristics, making relevant factors transparent using explainable artificial intelligence (XAI), and identifying similar treatment cases from the past.

The partnership between Furtwangen University and iOMEDICO enables a close integration of research and practice, which drives both medical and technological innovation. The project strengthens regional collaboration and has the potential to significantly improve oncological care.

Funding

The project is funded by the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology, and Space as part of the FH Impuls funding programme (CoHMed partnership).
