Women for safety, innovation and commitment
Research on promoting women in engineering and safety technology
The F-SIE research project investigates how women in particular can be specifically recruited for engineering and safety-related fields and retained in safety-oriented professions. The project supports women and TINA* individuals in their professional development and career planning and aims to empower them in the safety sector, help them network, and increase the visibility of role models. The project consists of two central components − the development and implementation of a workshop and mentoring programme, and its evaluation and the derivation of recommendations for action for employers.
Furtwangen University contributes its safety engineering expertise to the project, with responsibility for the following components: from the analysis of gender-specific barriers in STEM fields to the development of practical content on firefighting, disaster control, and hazard prevention, to the scientific evaluation of the program,e content. The focus is particularly on female students, graduates, and career changers who are to be inspired by technical topics – above all in the Security & Safety Engineering and Risk, Reliability and Engineering degree programmes. HFU is exploiting the interface between technology and social relevance, thus making safety an attractive career path for women.
