Medical Engineering - Technologies and Development Processes

to the study programmes

Develop innovations for health!

Our "MTE" bachelor's programme combines medicine with engineering. By developing new medical instruments and devices, you will help to improve patient care! We'll teach you everything you need to know about digitalisation, product management and regulatory affairs.

  • ECTS: 210 ECTS
  • Programme duration: 7 semesters
  • Campus: Tuttlingen
  • Faculty: Industrial Technologies
  • Programme begins: winter semester (October)
  • Application deadline: 15 July (winter semester)
  • Entry requirements: university entrance qualification
  • Teaching language: German
  • Accreditation: yes (accredited through the university system accreditation)
  • Location advantage Tuttlingen is the world centre of the medical technology industry. You will benefit from our proximity to the leading companies in the market - from the very beginning you'll be studying in close contact with industry and be learning on "real" tasks.
  • Our special electives During your advanced courses, you can choose the direction in which you want to specialise. What will it be - product and process management, instruments and devices, or digitalisation and computer-assisted systems?
  • You're there live Our links with practice are strong. So strong in fact that in our "Sectio Chirurgica" lecture we broadcast standard operations from Tübingen University Hospital and discuss them with a doctor.
  • Secure career People are getting older and older, and the entire medical sector is becoming increasingly important. Clever solutions and products are needed - and the expertise to develop them is in high demand!

Details of the programme

Programme content and structure

We work closely with industry on the bachelor's programmes on the Tuttlingen Campus. The companies in our Friends of Tuttlingen Campus Association help shape the content of our courses - which is why studying medical engineering with us is particularly practical, cutting-edge and "Powered by Industry". You'll get to know companies through excursions and student projects, and you'll be doing your internships in the companies' labs. We also offer you a lecture series with experts from industry and a special mentoring programme.

Important principles

In this degree programme, it is important for us to provide you with know-how from the planning and development to the realisation of medical devices and products. Because we're a university of applied sciences, we attach great importance not only to making sure you know the theory – we also offer plenty of opportunities for you to apply your knowledge in practice. You can also gain experience in a company during the entire fourth "internship" semester.

Many specialty areas

From the fifth semester onwards, you can choose the area in which you would like to become an expert. From the fifth semester onwards we offer specialisation options in product and process management, instruments and devices, or digitalisation and computer-assisted systems, giving you the opportunity to hone your profile. We are also the only German university to offer a specialisation in Regulatory Affairs, i.e. specialist knowledge relating to medical device approval.

The crowning glory

After seven semesters, you can look forward to your bachelor's degree! To do this, you have to immerse yourself in your thesis in the last semester of your studies. You'll decide on the topic together with companies, with whom you'll also establish further close contacts while working on your thesis.
Speaking of close contacts – many of our graduates receive concrete job offers during their studies!
