Medical Engineering - Clinical Technologies

to the study programmes

Health-oriented and patient-centered

Medicine and technology are growing ever closer together. Innovative technologies are helping to treat patients better and more individually.

Minimally invasive techniques in surgery and cardiotechnology are developing rapidly, as are sports medicine technology, organ support systems, imaging techniques, computer-aided communication technologies and app-based applications. Our degree programme will prepare you to contribute to this exciting future technology!

  • ECTS: 210 ECTS
  • Programme duration: 7 semesters
  • Campus: Schwenningen
  • Faculty: Mechanical and Medical Engineering
  • Programme begins: winter semester (October), summer semester (March)
  • Application deadline: 15 January (summer semester), 15 July (winter semester)
  • Entry requirements: university entrance qualification
  • Teaching language: German
  • Accreditation: yes (accredited through the university system accreditation)
  • Exciting areas of specialisation After studying the basics of medical technology, you can specialise in "Biomedical Technologies", "Operating Theatre Engineering/Cardiotechnology" and "Sports Medicine Technology".
  • Laboratory simulation You will be trained in our impressive laboratories. In the Center for Applied Simulation, you will get to know innovative devices and procedures, for example heart-lung machines in our operating simulation.
  • Preferably practical It is important to us that you don't just gain theoretical knowledge. That's why you'll be able to work on specific projects from clinics and industry right from the start of your studies, so that you can practice applying your knowledge in practice.
  • That extra something With us, you can also obtain the internationally recognized EBCP (European Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion) certificate in technical medicine. We are one of the few training centres in Europe for this!

Details of the programme

Programme content and structure

The programme provides you with a broad basis of fundamental medical technology know-how, and then you decide for yourself how to proceed:

Specialisation in biomedical technologies
This focus deals with the development of innovative procedures and devices in medical monitoring, therapy and diagnosis. You'll acquire this in-depth technical knowledge in special lectures, practical courses and in our university's own research projects.

Specialisation in surgical engineering/cardiotechnology
Heart-lung machines and organ support systems are sophisticated devices. If you choose this focus, you will be heading towards a career as a perfusionist. These engineers are the link between doctors and technology in hospitals. You'll be taught in-depth medical knowledge for this job.

Specialisation in sports medicine technology
Personalised medicine, the development of individual training equipment or supportive aids require sports medicine fundamentals and knowledge of biomechanics. This is where you're in demand as an engineer! Intelligent sensors and developments from the field of medical technology are increasingly being used in the sports, fitness and rehabilitation sectors.

Foundation studies

The foundation courses (1st and 2nd semester) include medical, technical and scientific subjects, such as anatomy, physiology, clinical chemistry, computer science, physics, electrical engineering, materials engineering, mechanics and design, which prepare you for subject-specific medical engineering.

Advanced studies

The advanced courses are taken over five semesters and include the practical internship semester. They combine the classic content of the engineering profession with practical projects from clinics and industry and offer maximum choice and specialisation possibilities.

Career prospects

Your specialist knowledge will be in demand! Depending on your area of specialisation, possible career paths include industry, clinics, sports performance centres and rehabilitation facilities or cardiotechnology and surgical engineering, a career in research, in the management of healthcare facilities or in the field of training and configuration of medical devices.

Subject focus

  • 50% Medicine
  • 40% Engineering
  • 10% Languages

Entry requirements

To be admitted to this degree programme, you need a university entrance qualification. You should also enjoy and be interested in technology, natural sciences and, of course, medicine.

Don't worry if you're feeling a bit unsure about natural science subjects, we'll teach you all the basics again!

MKT specifics

You can work on your own exciting projects during your studies. You'll be closely supervised by lecturers from the field and receive support in realising your future-oriented ideas.

Whether it's a gesture-controlled robot, the further development of our simulated patient in the operating theatre or an intelligent therapy device – there are no limits to your imagination! And perhaps you'll take a big step towards the future of medical technology!

What's included
