Details of the programme

Programme content and structure

The mechatronics programme on the Tuttlingen Campus focuses in particular on the challenges of developing intelligent systems and modern, digitalised production. It is based on a broad range of fundamentals from mechanical engineering and the important content of electrical engineering and computer science for mechatronics and production technology.

Not just the basics

In the first two semesters, we build up your engineering fundamentals. After that, you will focus on programming and computer science, electrical engineering, production engineering, mechanics and design as well as automation and drive technology, robotics, sensor technology, measurement and control technology. Don't worry – we take it step by step!

Gain experience

In your advanced study courses, you can choose between specialising in mechatronics and production. This specialisation enables future cross-industry activities. Questions of system integration, industrial communication technology, digitalisation and networked production play a special role during your advanced studies.

Thesis to finish

In the second half of your programme, you work on real projects from the field. You'll be working on mechatronic or production engineering tasks and applying the latest AI methods, for example. Finally, you can apply all this experience to your bachelor's thesis, in which you develop solutions to a real-life problem from industry.

Entry requirements

To study MDP, you need a university entrance qualification. 

However, there are also opportunities to study with us without an Abitur or Fachhochschulreife, for example if you have vocational training and at least three years of professional experience and can qualify for a degree programme via an aptitude test.

Study model with company commitment

We also offer the MDP bachelor's degree programme on the Tuttlingen Campus as a so-called "industrial degree". This means that you can combine vocational training and studies and earn money right from the start. In addition, these study models naturally give you even deeper practical insights and build a particularly close relationship with your industrial company.

These options are available:

  • Study Plus combines studying with vocational training in 9 semesters (qualifications: IHK skilled worker certificate and Bachelor of Science)
  • The industrial degree programme combines the degree programme with vocational training in 9 semesters and also offers a lot of practical relevance through industry modules and the option of a stay abroad (qualifications: IHK skilled worker certificate and Bachelor of Science)
  • The trainee programme combines in-depth practical experience with full-time study
  • The individual part-time study programme enables you to combine work and study

Your career prospects

MDP graduates develop intelligent systems, design robotics solutions and implement them. They design strategies and implement technologies for the intelligent, networked, digital factory (smart factory). They provide important impetus for the automation and digitalisation of devices, processes, systems and machines. The demand for specialists in companies is therefore correspondingly high – higher than the supply.

The bachelor's degree is the first step on your academic path. If you don't want to go straight into a career, you can gain further qualifications with a Master's degree. On the Tuttlingen Campus, for example, we offer a Master's in Mechatronic Systems, which could be the perfect complement to your MDP bachelor's degree.

Faculty of Industrial Technologies

The Faculty of Industrial Technologies on the Tuttlingen Campus is something very special. At HFU, all subject areas are taught with a lot of practical relevance– but on the Tuttlingen Campus, students benefit from a special proximity to companies in the region. The focus here is on cooperation with industry in many practicals, students are allowed to work in company labs and can thus also make important contacts for their future careers. At "ITE", we focus our degree programmes on current topics of the future – digitalisation and technologisation, smart materials, medical technology, the energy transition, sustainability and human-machine interaction are just some of the exciting topics that we are helping to shape the future with.
