Engineering Psychology Bachelor (I6401)

Engineering Psychology

Bachelor of Science

Making technology human

The Engineering Psychology degree offered at the Tuttlingen Campus of Furtwangen University combines psychology with engineering. The interdisciplinary programme focuses on the "human" factor, behaviour and cognitive abilities, in designing products.

In your 7-semester bachelor's programme, you will learn about the demands, limitations and competences of man and machine, because increasing mechanization in companies and societies and the 4th industrial revolution demand intelligent solutions in man-machine interactions.

Whether in medical engineering, the automotive sector, industrial robots or multimedia devices - technology must be intuitive for the user. What makes a system function well is not only its technical features, but also good usability and enjoyment in using the product. For this reason, the focus of Engineering Psychology is on user experience. This so-called "joy of use" is a decisive differentiating factor between products.

Programme objectives

The objectives of the programme are to see humans as a whole. With your engineering knowledge, you will design systems to meet human needs. With your know-how you will meet current and future demands in business and society and create efficiency and effectiveness on all levels.

Areas of focus

  • General psychology
  • Cognitive psychology
  • Psychological methods
  • Man-machine systems
  • Human-centred design
  • Work/Organisational psychology
  • Ergonomics
  • Engineering
  • Communication
  • Management/Working methods

Career opportunities

Graduates of the Engineering Psychology programme develop products and implement socio-technical systems. You shape the interaction between man and machine. Through your knowledge of humans, their behaviour and cognitive abilities, you will make technology intuitively usable. You will also ensure that the use of the product provides "joy of use" and will be in demand in all engineering sectors, in IT, medical engineering, and in the sport and recreation sector.

Areas of employment

  • Product design and development
  • Interactive design
  • Product and project management
  • User research, human factors engineering
  • Empirical research and methodology development
  • Interdisciplinary teamwork
  • Consulting and services, training

What can you do after your bachelor's?

The bachelor's degree can be your first step in a successful working career but you can also follow it with a master's degree, either at Furtwangen University or another university. If you would like to apply for a master's, find out more about the various master's degrees we offer.

Study Engineering Psychology "Powered by industry"

The bachelor's programme on the Tuttlingen Campus is run in close cooperation with industry. The companies in the sponsoring Friends of University Campus Tuttlingen actively participate in teaching and in the design of the study programme. The Engineering Psychology programme is therefore workplace relevant and cutting-edge: company visits, student projects and internships take place in various companies. Experts from industry offer lecture series. This gives students deeper insights into the field of Engineering Psychology, as well as the everyday work and demands of engineers working in this field.

Study in the technology hot spot of Tuttlingen

Tuttlingen is not only the world centre of medical technology. Core industries also include mechanical and plant engineering, metalworking, precision engineering, machine tools, sensors, drive and control technology, and automation and manufacturing technology. It is one of the strongest industrial regions in the state and in Germany. Career perspectives in a local company after graduation could not be better.
