Tracking down cybercriminals the fun way

to HFU News
Franziska Romer is sitting at a desk in front of a monitor. There are keys on the desk top, and small cacti standing on it.

Is there a clue hidden somewhere on this desk? Franziska Romer had great fun developing the cyber security workshop at Furtwangen University, which students can register for during the autumn holidays as part of the Uni Taster Programme.

New addition to the Uni Taster Programme at Furtwangen University - a data security workshop

It’s that time of year again during the autumn holidays − upper-school pupils can take part in the Uni Taster Programme at HFU to experience what it’s like to study and get a feel for university life. From 26 to 29 October, the university has put together a wide range of activities at its Furtwangen, Schwenningen and Tuttlingen campuses, covering the fields of engineering, computer science, health, media and security.

One of the programmes for the HFU Uni Taster Programme was developed by Franziska Romer. The IT specialist works as a member of staff at HFU and really enjoys supervising workshops for school pupils, as well as organising IT projects. “The topic of cyber security and data protection is important for young people. They’re constantly on social media and various other platforms, and often they’re not aware of the trail of personal data they’re leaving behind there,” says Romer. Everything is already prepared for the cybersecurity workshop on 26 October; in Building C, the second floor will be turned into a workshop space. “We present the topic in a way that makes it fun – which is why there’s only a brief ten-minute introduction before we start working on a real-life case,” reveals Romer. Participants will be able to search for clues both physically and digitally, find evidence and, as Romer assures us, “turn everything that isn’t nailed down upside down”. Anyone who experiences through the case study just how easily movements can be traced in the digital world will also become more attentive and cautious themselves. “A good example is using the same username across multiple platforms,” says Franziska Romer, offering her first tip. During the first trial run of the new workshop with a Year 10 class, this gave quite a few of them pause for thought.

Those interested can still register until 21 October for the Computer Science Taster Day, the Cyber Security Workshop and all other Uni Taster Programme programmes. Further information and the registration link can be found on the university’s website: https://hfu.li/tgol
