1 October: Furtwangen University invites those interested in research to Open Day and opening of new cleanroom laboratory

On Thursday, 1 October, Furtwangen University (HFU) celebrates another milestone at its Research Center in Rottweil − a new cleanroom laboratory there will open up new avenues for research. The public is welcome to attend the inauguration of the new premises and gain exclusive insights into current research projects during the open day.

At 4.00pm the research center at Neckartal 142 in Rottweil will open its doors offering guided tours of the new laboratory. Afterwards, the researchers will be on hand to chat and answer questions during a social gathering with a barbecue.

The new cleanroom is an ISO Class 7 laboratory and thus meets the requirements for real-world production processes of approved medical devices. The cleanroom is used to produce functional coatings in industrial quantities, for example for medical devices or delicate components such as watch springs. Current projects are being carried out in collaboration with the University Eye Clinic in Tübingen and the University of Ulm on the topic of ‘sharp vision in old age’. In addition, solutions for medical technology are being developed in collaboration with the companies KLS Martin SE & Co. KG and KARL STORZ SE & Co. KG – including a 3D probe designed to visualise nerves within body orifices and thus prevent surgical damage. In parallel, the team is working on new plasma processes that can replace climate-damaging gases in the cleaning of printed circuit boards. A research project is planned for the future in collaboration with surgeons in Rottweil, which will focus on the development of patient-specific finger joint replacement implants.

The research work carried out in the new cleanroom at the Rottweil Research Center complements the existing laboratory for micro- and nanotechnology at HFU in Furtwangen through industry-oriented transfer work and applied research. Schools in Rottweil also benefit from this infrastructure, as they collaborate with the center through laboratory practicals and seminar courses as part of the A-level programme.

The cleanroom is funded by KLS Martin SE & Co. KG, whilst the Rottweil Research Center is supported by the City of Rottweil. At HFU, teaching, research and industrial applications are closely interlinked – students from the ‘Engineering and Business Management’, ‘Advanced Precision Engineering’ and ‘Micromedical Engineering’ degree programmes are also involved in the research work.

No registration is required for the open day.
