Three HFU projects nominated for the Südkurier Future Prize
The Südkurier Future Prize is awarded to companies, institutions and organisations that actively shape our region, drive innovation and demonstrate social responsibility. The competition places special features on the areas of ecology/sustainability, democracy/society and education/social affairs – in other words, precisely those areas where specific projects improve the lives of local people.
At Furtwangen University (HFU), no fewer than three projects have been nominated for the 2026 Future Prize − a clear indication of how firmly HFU’s research and development work is rooted in the region and of the contribution it makes to a sustainable local community.
The HFU’s nominated projects are:
Project 1: 3R Development and Transfer Centre
The 3R Development and Transfer Centre is working on the development of 3D tissue models intended to replace animal testing in the future. The so-called 3R principles aim to reduce, refine and, ideally, completely replace animal testing. Research into realistic 3D tissue models makes an important contribution to this – both scientifically and ethically.

Project 2: Sound Table at the Care & Technology Lab
The Care & Technology Lab (IMTT) is developing a novel sound table that brings music and sound to life, whilst specifically involving people with disabilities or special support needs. The sound table combines technological innovation with social inclusion and demonstrates how digitalisation and assistive technologies can be used to make cultural and creative activities more inclusive.

Project 3: Motorised instruments for people with disabilities
Specially developed, motorised instruments are designed to enable people with disabilities to make music – even when traditional instruments cannot be played, or can only be played with great difficulty, due to physical limitations. The project relies on technical support and creative solutions to break down barriers and strengthen cultural participation. Music thus becomes an inclusive experience that is possible regardless of individual physical abilities.
