At the next MedTalk at the IFC, Prof. Dr. Hadi Mozaffari Jovein will speak about implant development — pictured here is the additive manufacturing process.
Development, design and manufacture of multifunctional implants
How can innovative implants be developed that, through the use of innovative materials and modern manufacturing technologies, ensure mechanical stability as well as biological and chemical compatibility, while also achieving a high degree of biofunctionality? The next MedTalk, taking place on Wednesday, 4 November, from 4.00 - 6.00pm at the Tuttlingen Innovation and Research Center (IFC) of Furtwangen University, will address this question.
The event is organised as part of CoHMed – Connected Health in Medical Mountains, Furtwangen University’s innovation and technology transfer partnership, in cooperation with MedicalMountains. The focus will be on current approaches to the development, design and manufacture of multifunctional implants – a field that uniquely brings together research, industrial application and clinical requirements.
Three expert presentations will offer different perspectives on modern implant development. Prof. Dr. Hadi Mozaffari Jovein, head of the CoHMed partnership and the Institute for Materials and Application Technology Tuttlingen at Furtwangen University, will speak about implant development and additive manufacturing. Dr.-Ing. Joachim Maier, Managing Owner of WEFA Medizintechnik GmbH, will highlight aspects of surface functionalisation. Dr. Berna Richter, Director of R&D for Orthopedic & Spine Surgery at AESCULAP AG, will present additively manufactured titanium implants for bone defects and cementless solutions in total knee arthroplasty, and will showcase new design concepts aimed at eliminating CoCr and bone cement.
MedTalk is aimed at all interested parties from the implant industry, research and development, clinical staff and students engaged in pioneering solutions in medical technology. Following the presentations, the event offers an opportunity for professional exchange and networking. Participants from other fields are also welcome.
CoHMed serves as an open platform for dialogue between universities, the regional business community, research institutions and network partners. The goal is to highlight innovations in medical technology, initiate joint research and technology transfer projects, and thereby further strengthen the innovative capacity of the Schwarzwald-Baar-Heuberg region.
Beyond this event, additional CoHMedConnect and MedTalk events, as well as lab tours, are planned for this and the coming year. Please mark your calendars for the CoHMedConnect event on 2 December, 2026, on the topic of “Medical Device Technology.” Interested parties from industry and research are invited to contact CoHMed and develop joint project ideas.
