37th Furtwangen Security Dialogue
The 37th lecture in the “Furtwanger Security Dialogue” series took place in early June. The lecture series is organised by the Security & Safety Engineering (BSc) and Risk, Reliability and Safety Engineering (MSc) programmes at the university.
Tim Braun, a graduate of the Security & Safety Engineering programme, class of 2022, has been working for the RWE Group since 2024. Braun provided participants in the Security Dialogue with unexpected and exclusive insights into wind turbines, among other things, he talked about rescuing people from wind turbines.
The wind energy sector is one of the most important branches of the energy production industry in Germany. Accounting for around 30 percent of the energy mix and employing approximately 124,000 people, it plays a central role in the energy transition.
Throughout the entire life cycle of wind turbines − from development through construction and operation to decommissioning − there are diverse and, in some cases, highly specific occupational safety risks. Creative solutions for risk mitigation are needed here.
Tim Braun highlighted the hazards that maintenance teams face on a daily basis at the wind farms. “An absolutely fascinating presentation − this visit was truly worth it,” was the unanimous sentiment among the event’s participants.
