Time-themed comic workshop hosted by German Clock Museum at Furtwangen University
How can time be told through pictures? What possibilities do comics offer compared to regular stories? Eight children explored these and other questions during a four-day comic workshop at the German Watch Museum at Furtwangen University. The young participants were supported by children’s book author Birgit Hedemann.
First, the children explored various apps for creating comics on tablets and experimented with digital drawing tools. The focus then shifted to developing their own narrative ideas − What makes a story exciting?, How do you create interesting characters and plotlines?
With curiosity and plenty of creative energy, they developed their own storylines centred around the theme of time. Drawings, photographs, and digital design helped them turn their ideas into individual picture stories and comics, step by step. At the end, the participants presented their works to family and friends. As a special highlight, the comics by these young artists were made available to a wider audience as posters during the exhibition of work by the HFU’s media studies programmes.
This free programme was funded by the Baden-Württemberg Foundation as part of the Literature Summer. The Clock Museum plans to publish the collected stories in a comic book to conclude the project.
