Medea Kübler receives award from Town of Furtwangen
In powerlifting, the bench press, squat, and deadlift involve regularly pushing oneself to one’s limits and beyond. Medea Kübler can squat 181 kilograms. The 19-year-old student at Furtwangen University has already competed in many international competitions and even the World Championships. At the end of June, she was honoured by the city of Furtwangen with the “Athlete of the Month” award for her achievements. “I’m not only personally delighted about this title, but also for the sport. It’s great that more and more people are becoming familiar with powerlifting and learning more about it,” says Kübler.
Anja Siedle, chairwoman of the Furtwangen Sports Association, highlighted Medea Kübler’s achievements during a city council meeting. At the end of May, she placed third at the Junior Women’s World Championships in Poland, and last year she placed sixth at the World Bench Press Championships. Siedle also emphasised Medea’s attitude of preferring to risk everything rather than wonder later what might have been possible.
Besides pursuing a career as an international athlete, Medea Kübler is also a student, taking Media Design at HFU. This is made possible by the HFU Elite Sports Programme, which provides flexible study conditions for elite athletes so they have enough time for training, preparation and competitions. “Medea’s achievements are extraordinary, which is why we nominated her for this award, and we’re delighted along with her that the city shares this view. Incidentally, her twin sister Thekla is also part of our elite sports programme. I’m excited to see what successes the two of them will achieve in the coming years,” says Christine Dorer, Elite Sports Coordinator at HFU.
Medea doesn’t have much time to catch her breath after receiving the award. She’s currently training intensively for the Powerlifting World Championships in South Africa, which start in a few weeks. “At HFU, I can flexibly adapt my studies to my sports schedule and combine the two. That’s great, because it lets me prepare for my competitions without any stress.”
